Honey Bees Network

A network of more than 350 biological monitoring stations consisting of apiaries and technological hives

THE NATIONAL BEE MONITORING NETWORK is made up of over 350 stations, (biological monitoring stations) positioned all over the country, in different agro-environments. Each station has 5 beehives. The stations were chosen in collaboration with important Italian beekeeping associations. The state of health of the bee colonies is monitored not only by their growth and development during the year, but also by the pathogens (viruses etc.) which may attack the bees. Therefore, one part of the monitoring (growth and development) takes place in the field, and the other (pathogen analysis) in a molecular laboratory, where samples are sent thanks to the support of the Experimental Animal Health Institutes. Information is also collected from technological beehives: these hives are equipped with sensors and detectors which allow data to be measured and transmitted automatically in real time. This large amount of data, when it is integrated, allows the network to use the bees to understand the state of health of the Italian agro-ecosystem.
