An observatory of the biodiversity of wild bees

THE WILD BEE BIODIVERSITY NETWORK monitors wild bees by identifying the bees and plants found on a predefined route (transect). Italian wild bees are very diverse, there are over 1,000 species, and to date little is known about their distribution and abundance. BeeNet has set up 24 transects in 11 Regions, and with the help of land use maps they have been positioned in two different environments: intensively cultivated farming (orange on the map) and semi-natural farming (green on the map). Samples of wild bees and information about the flora present along the transect are collected monthly, in some regions thanks to the collaboration of the entomology colleagues in Italian universities. The samples are sent to the entomology laboratory, which identifies every single specimen. The data collected show the correlation between the different species of wild bees, the flora present and the agro-environment the transect is located in, permitting the biodiversity of the Italian territory to be analysed.
